Reasons Why I’m Thankful for Working at Home

ThanksgivingBy Holly Reisem Hanna

While driving in morning rush hour traffic, to meet my mom at her doctor’s appointment, I was reminded of all the reasons why I am thankful for being able to work at home. You see, recently my mom has been having some serious problems with her vision, in fact she has been having short bursts of total darkness or blindness. As you can imagine this was a devastating shock to her and our family alike.

Luckily for me, I work at home, and I am able to attend her doctor visits with her and help her out as needed. And while it seems we are on the path to finding a diagnosis and plan of action, I am comforted in the fact that whatever the outcome, that I will be able to help her to the fullest extent because of my current working situation.

With it being Thanksgiving I only see it fit to voice all the reasons why I am thankful for working at home.

1. I am so thankful that I get to spend everyday with my daughter. I feel so fortunate that I’ve been able to experience every little step, each new word and all the new discoveries that she makes each and everyday. Not to mention the thousands of hugs, smiles and sounds of laughter that I get to experience on a daily basis!

2. I am thankful that I am able to be there for my mom in her time of need.  I can drive her around, help her with her daily chores, bring her to the doctor or just meet her for lunch or coffee. I am thankful for the flexibility to do all of these things and the reassurance that I can be there for her if her condition worsens.

3. I am thankful that I don’t have a daily commute. I used to drive two hours round trip every single day. After dealing with all of the morning rush hour traffic and stress that it brings, I am reminded of how peaceful and cozy it is at home.

4. I am thankful for the money that I am able to save by working from home. From cutting costs on gas, car maintenance, dry cleaning, lunches eaten out and frequent stops to the local coffee shop, I have been able to save a significant amount of money and wear and tear on my car. It has also been good for the earth.

5. I am thankful that everyday I get to do a job that I love! I never dread working and I am always excited to see what new things each day holds.

6. I am thankful for the wonderful women and men that I get to interact with on a daily basis. I feel so blessed to be part of such a supportive and thriving community.

Happy Thanksgiving!

And when your daughter grows up she will be thankful she had a WAHM when she was growning up. Maybe someday I’ll be able to write the same type of blog. Still a working mom at this point. :-(
