When you work from home you can sometimes get overwhelmed by everything that is going on around you. Not only do you have the normal demands of business, like deadlines and customers calling, but you also have all the demands of the home. Kids, projects, cleaning, chores, and all of the chaos can add up to a lot of stress and unproductive days.
However, you can find your work at home bliss. Here are 4 ways to stay productive and sane:
1. Separate Office:
It is important for you to have your own workspace. Although it is tempting to set up shop where the kids are playing, doing so will only lead to more stress. You need to have your own office space where you can shut the door, and filter out distractions.
It is also a good idea to have a kid free zone, so that you can stay organized without having to worry about little hands getting into your stuff. Try to pick a location that is not within the main flow of traffic (like the living room or kitchen). Think about a back bedroom or an out of the way nook, where you can be assured of some privacy.
2. Schedule Office Hours:
Another way to remain productive when working from home is to set office hours. Having set hours help you communicate to others when it is appropriate for calls and social interactions, and when it is not. Establishing office hours gives you a time frame where you can get things done, without feeling guilty for screening phone calls, and saying no to favors and requests. This also helps get your body get into a work routine, so you feel less distracted and out of sorts.
3. Establish Boundaries:
Keeping work and home separate is important for your metal stability. You don't want to be the parent that is too busy working to play, but you can’t afford to play all day and not get any work done either. Keeping work hours separate from home hours is vital. That way you can be fully involved in home or in work, just not both at the same time. Creating firm boundaries helps you to maintain your personal time as well, which is part of reducing your stress and remaining productive.
4. Get Help:
Last but not least, ask for help when you need it. You can’t do everything yourself and outsourcing certain tasks can greatly reduce your stress load. Utilizing a virtual assistant, a food delivery service, a housekeeper, or even a mommy helper can be just what you need to get through the day. Babysitters or nannies for work at home parents are not uncommon, and are highly recommended for work at home moms that have infants or toddlers to contend with.
We all need a little help sometimes, even if we do work from home. These tips can help you to remain sane and productive as a work from home parent. You do work, so make sure to focus on how you spend your time. Don’t waste it on trivialities; instead enjoy your work and your home life and live a healthier, more balanced life.
