“You were born with potential. You were born with goodness and trust. You were born with ideals and dreams. You were born with greatness. You were born with wings. You are not meant for crawling, so don’t. You have wings. Learn to use them, and fly”. – Rumi
I love that quote, just love it! I feel like this is the destiny of every woman! We can fulfill our dreams, we can have our greatness and we CAN fly! It is all there for our taking! I am going to make this quote a large print for my health coaching office so every woman who walks in sees it and can take a moment to think about how this quote is relevant to her life, goals and dreams.
If this quote is true; that we all have greatness and wings, why don’t we reach out and take it? I know that I sometimes feel more like an Albatross waddling around on land than a Great Blue Heron soaring over the water. We have to look at all aspects of our life if we are going to accomplish this greatness. If we are going to be successful business women, shouldn’t we also be successful in our personal lives, our relationships and our health and wellness?
Right about this time of year, most of us look at our businesses and set new goals and expectations for the coming year. We have a business plan, a marketing plan and a budget. We expect to set goals and know the plan for our businesses to be successful. Well guess what? We can, and dare I suggest SHOULD, do the same thing for our personal lives. Don’t put yourself on hold while building your business. You can and should be successful in all areas of your life!
Use your business savvy and knowledge of goal setting and planning to set personal goals. (Don’t call them resolutions, resolutions were made to be broken- but goals are made to be attained!) Here are a few simple ways to set attainable well-rounded goals for our personal lives and continue to FLY.
Be Simple.
Do not set 20 different goals with three parts! Pick a few categories and set ONE goal each. The five categories I like to use are Health, Exercise, Relationships, Spirituality and Career.
Be Realistic.
You are probably not going to lose 100 pounds by March. You are probably not even going to lose 100 pounds by the end of the year. Do not set yourself up for failure before you even start.
Be Smart.
Have a plan to reach your goals. If your goal is to lose that stubborn last 25 pounds, then know how you plan to go about accomplishing that. Will you follow Weight Watchers? Will you hire a Health Coach to help you?
Be Introspective.
This business of setting goals is serious work. Take the necessary time to evaluate your life and what you want. Since you are not setting 100 goals, just five or so, you want them to be meaningful.
We all know these things; sometimes we just need the reminder, to hear it again. Losing weight is not easy. Keeping up with relationships takes work. Making sure our careers stay on track means we have to know what that track is. Setting goals to accomplish our dreams for our personal lives as well as our businesses just makes good sense. It gives us something to keep in front of us as we go through our daily lives. Something to go back to and help us level set as we make decisions throughout the year. You can uncover that greatness and fly. So set those goals and do it!
What personal goals will you set for 2012? I would love to hear them!
