Start Treating Your Blog Like a Business – 5 Reasons You Need Cloud Storage

WD My Cloud EX2By Holly Reisem Hanna

Thanks to WD for sponsoring today’s post and for providing me with a My Cloud EX2 to use and review.

When I began my blogging journey, I backed up my computer files on multiple flash drives. Yes, I know, not a good strategy, but I wanted to save money. But after a virus took down my laptop and I had to pay $99 for file recovery, I decided to invest in an external hard drive.

My external hard drive worked great, but when I switched from a PC to a Mac, I had to get a new external hard drive that was Mac compatible. Again this worked well, but only when I actually remembered to back it up. Luckily, during this time I never lost any of my files. But if I had, it would have been a complete nightmare for my business. (more…)

Top Mobile Apps to Accept Payments on the Go

Top Mobile Apps to Accept Payments on the GoBy Erin Steiner

A couple of years ago, a friend and I were hanging out at a craft fair when we found some handmade soap that we loved and desperately wanted to buy. Unfortunately, neither of us had thought to bring cash; we were about to leave to find an ATM when the vendor said, “I can just swipe your card here.”

Then she pulled out her smartphone, plugged a plastic card swipey thing into the headphone jack, and a couple of minutes later, the soap was ours.

Accepting mobile payments is common now, but at the time, I was amazed. What magic wizardry was this? I couldn’t wait to tell my friends—they had a touring band and were lamenting their lack of ability to accept credit cards on the road. I think I told everybody I met that day about it. “On her smartphone!” I kept exclaiming over and over … until my friend told me I was being annoying and demanded I stop talking about it.

Now there are a bunch of different apps that will allow you to accept mobile payments, and card swipers come in a bunch of different shapes and sizes.

Security is the biggest issue now. According to “Designing an iOS Payments SDK for Security,” one of the biggest challenges facing the mobile payment industry is finding a way to keep sensitive and personal information from being stored within the app’s source code. (more…)

In this New Year I find myself doing what I normally do: reflecting on aspects of my life where I can strive for improvements. This may mean breaking bad habits, instituting new ones, or simply finding ways to be more productive.

I’m a big believer in leveraging tools to help me accomplish these changes. And in today’s world, we have loads of tools for almost anything and everything we could possibly need. As they say, in most cases there’s probably an “app for that.” These tools are available via the interwebs on your desktop computer, or are just a click and a download away on your iPhone or Android device.

Apps to Help Your Home Business Succeed

Apps to Help Your Home Business SucceedBy Katie Elizabeth

Based on my own experience, I know that working from home can be a rewarding, fulfilling experience. It’s a way to gain independence while maintaining your own schedule and if you’re able to make it work, you’re on the right path.

However, I also know that working from home requires discipline that those who work in a professional or office environment don’t always understand. Your business is your own responsibility, just like mine is my own. Because of this, having a little help with the use of ever-evolving technology can be more than beneficial.

I’ve found that iPhone and Android apps can be the difference between an at-home business becoming a great success or a massive failure.

Check out a few of my favorite apps below:

FreeAgent

Creating and maintaining spreadsheets can cause more than a few headaches. In many cases, finding an easy way to invoice customers that is affordable and easy to use is nearly impossible. FreeAgent has changed the game. (more…)

Introductory Guide to SEO for Small BusinessesBy Liam Thomas

Due to the rise of the Internet, the importance of SEO has never been greater. Shops on the high street are closing down at a fast pace as some customers are now preferring the convenience of shopping online. So now, no matter how big or small your company is, getting your website viewed by more customers is absolutely paramount.

Fortunately for you, understanding SEO does not require a degree in IT nor a huge budget. To put it simply: SEO (search engine optimization) is all about getting your company as close to the top of your desired search as possible.

Understanding the Search Engine

Think of a search engine as an answering machine. You ask the search engine a question and it uses ‘crawlers’ or ‘spiders’ to search the entirety of the Internet to find the most relevant and most important answer to your problem. (more…)
