Whether you’re juggling work with childcare, household chores or attempting to enjoy some semblance of a social life, you no doubt go to bed each night exhausted, wishing that there were more hours in the day, or days in the week, to get everything you need to do done.
However there are actually plenty of tasks you can tick off your list simply by multitasking effectively. Follow these simple tips and you could gain up to two extra hours a day by making a few small changes to your routine.
Gain 5 minutes
While you’re waiting for the kettle to boil, why not tackle any outstanding washing up or give your kitchen a quick clean? Little things like this will help the running of your home go more smoothly, and tackling it now, when you might otherwise be daydreaming out of the window, means you don’t have to worry about it later at night when the kids have gone to bed and you just want to relax.
Gain 10 minutes
Prep in advance. While the kids’ bath is running, or before you go to bed each night, take the time to make sure your family knows what they’re doing and where they need to be the following day. Preparing lunches and selecting outfits for the day ahead can also free up precious time in the morning.
Gain 15 minutes
If your job involves reading, opt for audio books and documents instead. Listening to your information or entertainment hands free during a grocery shopping trip, or while preparing the dinner, will allow you to absorb facts while your hands are free to get on with the task in hand.
Gain 30 minutes
Restrict yourself to checking your emails and social media accounts at set times of the day and for set amounts of time, such as 15 minutes. Focusing on the electronic admin side of your work first thing in the morning, after lunch and at the end of the day can save you up to half an hour each day, as you won’t constantly be checking your emails/messages every five minutes. Use this spare time to organize your finances online – check statements, pay the electric bill and make sure your accounts book is up to date.
Gain 60 minutes
Watching your favorite TV show in the evening can be relaxing and productive at the same time, without having to leave the sofa. Use this time to tackle little tasks that have built up, such as organizing your inbox, backing up your work and family photos on a hard drive, or even making simple clothing repairs. You can still keep one eye on the TV and therefore be entertained, whilst also ticking niggling tasks off your to do list.
