Last week I stepped out of my comfort zone and produced my first video blog post, and from all the comments I received it seems as if video blogging is on a lot of people’s to-do list for 2010.
So here is the down low of how to create your own video blog post.
My laptop has a built in camera and microphone, if you don’t have video capabilities built into your computer, you will need to shoot the video using some sort of external recording device (digital camera, iPhone, iPod touch, or video camera) and then upload the video to your computer.
If you do have video built into your computer here are the steps that you will need to take.
- Go to your computer’s start menu and click on Windows Movie Maker.
- On the left hand side of the screen it will give you the option to “capture from video device”, click on this.
- Next select the video device that you would like to use and click the next button.
- After you have typed in your video’s title and set the quality control settings you’ll be ready to capture your video. Position the screen so that you are in the center of the preview window and click on “start capture” when you’re ready to shoot. When you are done recording click on “stop capture” and then finish.
- You can now preview the video and if you like what you see you can add in titles and credits. If you don’t like the take just repeat the steps above.
- To add a title and credits, click on edit movie which is located on the left hand side of the screen. Once you click on edit, click on “titles and credits”, it will then give you options to add in titles and credits at various points in the video. Click on which time point you want to add in credits or titles. Enter the text that you would like to add. You can also change the font, color and animation by clicking on more options. When you are finished adding you text click on done.
- Finish your video by saving it to your computer.
- Head over to You Tube.com and if you don’t already have an account with them you will need to create one (it takes just a few minutes and it’s free).
- After you have created and verified your You Tube account, click on the yellow upload button which is located on the upper right hand corner, you will then be prompted to click on the upload video button. As it uploads your video you can title and tags. After it has finished uploading you can save your changes and share your video with the world.
- You can add the video to you blog by copying the embedded code that is located to the right of the video and pasting into your blog’s HTML page and voilà you have your first video blog (vlog) post.
You Tube also has a feature where you can record and publish your video straight from their site using your computer’s built in camera, but the quality of the video is not as good.
For those of you who plan to step out of your comfort zone and try video blogging for 2010, let me know when you publish your first vlog, I’d love to see it! Happy Holidays!

Hey Holly-
Thanks for the step-by-step. I wanted to add the Flip Video to the list of recording devices. It’s very affordable, takes high-quality video and can be uploaded directly to YouTube. I’ve found the device and software to be super easy to use.

I just saw an ad for those, they are really neat!
Happy Holidays,

Holly- I really like this step by step for video logging. This is something I want to try new this year. I have the flip share camera but I also have a camera on my computer with access to Imovie. I am a bit intimidated though because it will really be putting myself out there. But I’m going to get out of my comfort zone this year and this will be one way I will do it. Thanks again.
