Tell us a little bit about yourself and your entrepreneurial journey.
I live in Dallas, Texas with my husband JB and my three children Eli 11, Katja 13, and Alex 19. I do what most busy moms do; balance a busy work life with busy kid schedules. After a successful 20 year career in corporate direct sales, I decided to make a bold move and launch my own company. Needless to say, this was not an easy decision; it took a lot of prayer and a lot of courage to answer a call I felt I had within me. I longed for a way to be independent and not reliant on someone else for my future. I was also ready to find a way where I would stop sacrificing time with my family.
My journey started as a vision to empower women as entrepreneurs and to bring to life an exclusive product line. The concept was that both the business opportunity and the products had to offer up something more, something different. I wanted to create a boutique of products that made the connection between beauty and health inside and out. Imagining it was easy! Creating, testing, molding and launching were the difficult task. Mía Mariu opened the virtual doors for business in May of 2008.
What did you do before launching your own business?
Prior to launching my business I had a very successful corporate career with two of the best known direct sales companies in the industry Mary Kay Cosmetics and Home Interiors & Gifts Inc. Needless to say both of those companies taught me a lot about the industry, about people, about the importance of making people feel important and especially about women. I knew if ever launched a business, I would do something in direct sales as there is nothing quite like it. The camaraderie, the friendships, the power of what people can do in this business is amazing.
How did you fund your business?
I started my business with my husband putting a significant amount of our savings to fund the company. I managed the business with this initial investment for the first three years. We got to a point where we needed to raise external funding to take the business to the next level of growth. We raised private equity capital late in 2010.
How many hours do you work a week and how much is spent is your home office?
It is hard to quantify how many hours I actually work. I work all the time. I have however learned the importance of making time for family and I never miss my kids soccer games unless I am traveling. The good news is technology allows me to stay connected all the time.
How would you rate your success?
As an entrepreneur you have to come to the realization that success takes hard work, diligence, persistence and time. We have succeeded in developing and bringing to market a superb line of health and beauty products along with one of the best compensation plans in the industry. We have big plans and expectations.
What has been your biggest business struggle as an entrepreneur?
My biggest struggle as an entrepreneur is to balance my desire and passion with how long it takes to actually achieve the success I want.
What advice would you give to a new direct sales consultant?
Success in this business is all about having the RIGHT attitude, having PERSISTENCE and PERSEVERANCE. Trials and rejection are part of any business but those who succeed are able to overcome their challenges and keep a positive attitude. You have to work it like a business. Many people come into direct sales expecting it to produce like a business, but they don’t treat it like a business.

- How many hours a week are you willing and able to dedicate to your business? (Some people want to dedicate more of their time but after they really analyze their schedule, they find they are really not able to commit to as much time as they thought)
- What specific activities are you doing to build and expand your business?
- How will you market your business after you exhaust your warm market?
- What expectations do you have for your business?
I believe setting the right expectations up front can lead to a more consistent and rewarding approach and result to their business.
How do you manage all of your personal and business activities?
I use technology! My iPhone helps me manage everything and I use all of it all the time when I am out and about. I have computers at my office and a laptop at home. I also do a lot of meetings over Skype and GotoMeetings which save a lot of time and unnecessary travel costs.
