Interview with WAHM Tracy Bennett of Stella & Dot
Do you work at home?
I work from home when I am not out flaunting my jewels and enjoying myself at my trunk shows!
How many children do you have?
One. Kelton, he is 21 months and the absolute light of my life.
How many hours do you work a week?
I work around 20-30 hours per week, give or take.
Tell us a little bit about Stella & Dot and how you got started.
I was laid off in December 2008 from a wonderful advertising agency in downtown Dallas, Texas. A friend of my husband’s knew my current Sr. Director with Stella & Dot and asked me if I wanted to look into it. I went to their site and instantly fell in love! It is a company inspired by and created for strong women. It is the modern home-based career that your mother never had. They’ve put the power of e-commerce, social networking and personal service behind an irresistible product. It’s the next big opportunity for our era.
How would you rate your success from 0 – 10?
I would rate my success at a 7 right now. (Still 7 months new!)
How do you manage all of your personal and business activities?
I try to balance as well as I can. I get emails, e-marketing, flyers, catalogs mailed and customer calls all done while my son is playing with the dog, his toys, or taking a nap. In the evening I try to get more done since he is asleep. Then I try to have some time for my husband, girlfriends and family. Sometimes I sneak in some reality TV, but who doesn’t? I think making a balance is important and I know that some weekends are packed with trunk shows and Stella & Dot events while others are completely devoted to my husband and child. I try to balance that too.
What has been your biggest business struggle?
My biggest business struggle has been stepping outside of my comfort zone to call clients, potential clients, potential hostesses and the like. I have broken out of a shell I never thought would break!
What are your favorite websites or blogs?
What advice would you give to a new entrepreneur or direct sales consultant?
Owning a business is empowering, rewarding, frustrating, hard work and amazing all at the same time! It is the best job anyone could ever have alongside being a parent. I find true joy—which is very different from happiness—in my business and my “new life”. I cannot imagine going back to corporate America. If you think you can’t do it, just stick it out. Success comes to those who never give up. I learn new things every day. Research blogs about direct sales, read books — Party with a Purpose and 48 Days to the Work you Love. Great reads! Surround yourself with knowledge. This industry introduces you to so many new and amazing people. I have made lifelong friends and learned how to nurture business and personal relationships.
