Do you work at home?
I work in my sleep—doesn’t everyone?! As a mother of three, it’s downright impossible to spend five full days at the office. That’s why I alternate in-office duties during the workweek with my husband and business partner, Terence. We both work three days a week. On days when I’m not in the office, I can usually manage to squeeze several hours in after dinner, and of course I always have my BlackBerry strapped to my hip for immediate updates.
How many children do you have?
Yes, I am the proud mother of three sons: Tiernan, who is five; Egan, who is three; and Rhodri, who just turned six months.
How many hours do you work a week?
Between days in and time at the home office, I still manage to clock anywhere between 50 and 60 hours a week.
How do you balance all of your business and personal activities?
Caffeine. Here in Canada, there’s this place called Tim Horton’s … Seriously though, I wouldn’t be able to do all the things I do if it weren’t for the help of my husband. Terence is the Vice-President of Scribendi, as well as a father extraordinaire; we split all our duties 50/50 and it works really well for us. It also helps that we have fantastic people working for us; our staff work very hard and are great at taking the initiative whenever necessary.
What was the inspiration behind Scribendi?
Scribendi was born out of frustration. In my prior career as a freelance journalist, I would see hundreds of press releases every week, all of which were riddled with grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. I decided to take matters into my own hands and create an online service that provided professional, affordable editing 24 hours a day. Today, Scribendi helps writers of all ages, nationalities, and backgrounds communicate clearly through written English. Our convenient, professional online service is utilized by a wide range of clients, including ESL students, established authors, and corporate executives.
What has been your biggest business struggle?
Finding the time! We have a ton of great ideas and plans for the business, all just waiting to be put into action. There never seems to be enough time in the day, even with the number of staff we have now.
What are your three favorite websites or blogs?
I follow probably a dozen or so sites for news on search engine marketing, social networking, web development, and so on. However, when I need a distraction, I like Metafilter, Facebook, and Salon.
What advice would you give to a new entrepreneur?
Never give up! Take Dory’s advice from the popular Pixar movie and “just keep swimming.” Believe in your business plan and yourself, regardless of what others say.
Does Scribendi currently have any home-based editing or proofreading positions available?
Scribendi is always looking to hire qualified, professional telecommute editors. Right now we’re pushing to recruit more overseas applicants, specifically in Australia and Europe, as well as editors who are interested in weekend assignments. For more information on how to apply, please visit Scribendi Employment.
