Last month I was able to introduce you to the Tastefully Simple home-based business opportunity. This month I was able to sit down with Denise Gonzales, a Tastefully Simple consultant to get an insider’s view into this direct sales company.
Tell us how you got involved with Tastefully Simple.
I first heard about Tastefully Simple from my cousin, Andrea in Tucson, Arizona. She had recently become a consultant and wanted me to host a party when she came to Texas to visit. After a successful party, I considered the opportunity for about a month before I decided to jump in. I really thought I’d join just to have access to the products since I didn’t know any consultants in Texas. I never imagined that I’d be having parties 10 years later and enjoying all the perks of being a Tastefully Simple consultant – food, friendships, and FUN!
What makes Tastefully Simple different from other direct sales companies?
We have a saying that “we only sell to people that eat.” Since everyone eats, our client base is not limited to any particular group of people. Additionally, since our products are consumable, there are opportunities for reorders. You can bet that once a client uses up their jar of Garlic Garlic ™, they will be coming back for more!
How many hours do you work a week and how much is spent in your home office?
I work about 4 hours for each party. That includes preparation, phone calls and communication with the host before and after the party, the party, and placing the orders. I would say that about one to one and a half hours are spent at my desk working with my team (This is in addition to my full-time teaching job and caring for my two sons).
How would you rate your success?
I have always strived to work my business consistently. Because of this, I feel like I have developed a solid, successful business. There have definitely been some ups and downs through the years, but 10 years later, I am still having parties, building my team, and enjoying the perks that come with being a Tastefully Simple consultant and Senior Team Manager.
What has been your biggest business struggle as a direct sales consultant?
The beauty of having my own business is that I am able to schedule when I work around my family and school activities. Since I am busy, I have to remind myself that my hours are “flexible, but not optional.” Sometimes it is a struggle to touch my business every day, but it is always my goal.
What advice would you give to a new consultant starting out?
Have fun! If you’re having fun and are excited about the products – the guests will follow.
How do you manage all of your personal and business activities?
I tend to do most computer work and party prep when the boys are settling down for the evening or busy on the weekend. Phone calls are sometimes made from the soccer field or while I’m sitting in the car waiting for a guitar lesson to finish. Thanks to technology, I can respond to and send emails, check on orders, and work on my calendar throughout the day with my phone.
