You’re looking for something to do, something to break up the day, and possibly a way to earn some extra income. A direct sales company is a great fit for any mom whether you stay-at-home or work outside the house.
When we first think of direct sales, many of us reminisce to the era of Tupperware parties or Avon consultants ringing the doorbell. The direct sales industry has evolved, and it’s now much easier to grow your business from home using social media.
If you have ever considered the thought of joining a direct sales company, read on for five reasons why you should take the chance and jump right in!
1. You already use direct sales products in your life today.
Maybe you love your latest Chef Kitchen® Gadget, or Wildtree® Spice to help you prepare those meals in advance? You might be sporting a pair of buttery soft LuLaRoe® Leggings while you are wearing your Origami Owl® Living Locket that represents your family. Whatever it is, you may have already dabbled in the world of direct sales by being a customer.
Imagine continuing your obsession with makeup or candles all while purchasing at a discount! Many direct sales consultants sign up purely for the discount in products they would otherwise buy. These consultants are known as “kit-nappers;” they take advantage of the amount of product offered for one, low startup kit price.
2. Being your own boss is a major attraction for those who sign up with a direct sales company.
You are in charge of how you want to approach the business. You make the decisions on how you want to sell your product (in home parties, online parties, vendor events, or fundraisers). The way you choose to work presents opportunities for you to grow, to learn new things about running a home-based business, and to help others along the way. This also means flexibility! As moms, we are always looking to “work smarter not harder” when it comes to parenting and running a household. You get to choose when, where, and how much you want to put into your direct-sales business.
3. You don’t have to be an extrovert to be successful.
The world of direct sales is unique, and many shy away from it thinking they are not “salesly” enough, or they do not want to bother their friends or family with pressure to buy certain products. The beauty of this is that social media has changed a lot of this thinking. You no longer have to sell just to friends and family. You can connect with a broader audience by using Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Periscope. Social media channels allow you to create a consistent presence, and through strategic marketing, you will find ways to make sales and grow your team all from the phone you hold in your hand. It takes work no doubt, but many are succeeding and are experiencing growth because of social media marketing.

4. The direct sales world is filled with networks of like-minded women (and men).
These networks include those in the same company as you and also direct-sales-focused groups online spearheaded by the incredible Brenda Ster is my go-to network. The group of more than 20,000 members represents many different direct-sales companies and home-based businesses. Brenda promotes strategic and tactical tips for direct sellers in how best to promote yourself, your brand, and your business through social media channels. Supportive groups like The Socialite Suite are special in that you connect with individuals at the same point in life and business as you and those who are further along in their journey do their utmost to support and encourage everyone along the way.
5. Flexible schedules and income opportunities.
One last reason why you should join a direct sales company is the opportunity to earn supplemental or even full-time income on your own schedule all while you stay at home. Each direct sales company is unique in that there are different paths to earning income and different requirements to remain active within a company. Start here with Holly’s Huge List of Direct Sales Companies. Research the company, look at the initial startup kit investment and read up on the consultant requirements. Choose a product you are passionate about, seek out a consultant, ask questions, and decide!

Conclusion
When I made the decision to join a direct sales company, reason No. 2 was my “why” story. As a stay-at-home mom to two young kids, I found myself in a spot where each day I gave 100 percent to my children, my home, and my husband. There was very little left at the end of the day to devote to my passions and interests. After joining Origami Owl, I have a creative outlet and an opportunity to learn new things and challenge myself. It is also a way to bring in income to pay for the fun extras, and I continue to make wonderful connections with other women all across the country (and the world).
I’d love to hear your “why” story if you are currently with a direct sales company. If you are thinking about joining a direct sales company but are still on the fence, what is holding you back? I’d love to know, let’s chat!

Hi Holly!!
I love love love direct sales and have been involved with numerous amazing companies over the years! My personal belief is that DS companies have some of the best products available in the market because they hold themselves to a much higher standard than companies who produce a product and place it on a store shelf. They need to make products that work! Otherwise, how would they stay in business??
They also tend to have a ‘mission’ that people can take to heart and identify with! I have joined many companies whose mission made my heart sing and I felt I could really get behind!! It made me feel like part of something big and so worthwhile!
I have met some of the most amazing women and men in this industry, many who have become lifelong friends, even after we’ve moved on to other things. And I’ve made some great money!
Best of all, I don’t have to answer to anyone but myself and have complete control over my business. I run my business according to my own terms. I can work when I want, vacation when I want, and spend time with my family without having to report to someone or ask for permission. What’s not to LOVE??
Your comprehensive list of DS companies is incredible! I was wondering if you had any plans to update it in the near future. (I’m sure that’s a job in and of itself!) There are a few companies who have since gone out of business, as well as some new ones which I don’t see listed here.
Thanks in advance and thank you so much for sharing your love of direct sales!

Hi Patti, I purchase a lot of products from direct sellers myself! Yes, I periodically update the list. As you know, the industry is seeing enormous growth so I add the new ones as fast as I can.

Great articles. I’ve been doing some research trying to find the “right” direct sales company for me and I am coming up short. I am looking for a fitness/athletic apparel company. I can’t believe there isn’t a company out there doing direct/home sales in this industry. I read through Holly’s thorough list and still didn’t see anything. Do you know of any companies out there doing fitness apparel?
Thank you
Tara

Hi Tara, Have you checked out BeachBody? They sell fitness programs, nutrition products, apparel, and gear. If you’re just looking for clothing, you may want to check out La Senorita Jolie, LuLaRoe, or Du North Designs. They all sell leggings and tanks. I also think La Senorita Jolie and Du North are having August specials on their startup kits. Good luck and keep us posted!
