Getting yourself out of a pattern of behavior or a habit can be one of the most challenging aspects of your life. Depending on the situation, it could mean an entirely different way of thinking then what you’re accustomed to. Essentially, you have to recondition yourself in order to break the chain of events that lead to that specific cycle or what drives the habit. With all of these modifications to your lifestyle, in order to the one attribute that to gain success is your confidence.
1. Self-Confidence
Having confidence in yourself means to have complete trust that you will accomplish the task at hand. For some, this confidence is built over years of experience. Others may accomplish this feat in less time, but all of them will need to know that they have the power within themselves to change. You need to “know” that you can adjust behaviors that lead to specific cycles – “thinking” you can instill doubt.
2. Cause and Effect
Although you don’t have control over what others think or say, you can still modify your own behaviors and actions in order to remove certain situations from developing. You do have complete control over yourself and no one can truly force you to do anything you don’t want to do. However, there could be consequences that follow certain aspects of life. For instance, the IRS can’t force you to pay taxes – although the outcome may be less than desirable for yourself and/or your family.
3. The Power Within
You need to believe wholeheartedly that you can accomplish the task you are faced with. Many facets of our lives are addictions in one way or another. You need to have faith that you can overcome these behaviors in order to succeed. Whether you believe in a higher power or not is irrelevant. At the end of the day, it is you that is faced with the challenges to break cycles in your life. If it gives you the strength to believe in the higher power, then so be it.

4. Get Psyched Up
As corny as it may sound, giving yourself regular pep talks isn’t something that you should scoff at. Getting yourself psyched up can greatly increase your chances of success. You need to find what drives you to improve and embrace it as your focal point. Remind yourself regularly of why you need to break the habit or cycle in order to improve aspects of your life. For many, this could be to improve the lives of their children.
5. Learn from the Experience
Even if you don’t succeed during your first attempt, it’s not really a failure if you’re able to take something from the experience. After all, most of us learn how to succeed better through failed attempts than successful ones. As long as you can see how the attempt failed, you can take steps to eliminate that particular variable next time. Self-confidence doesn’t ensure your success in any given task. It only greatly improves the outcome.
In order to focus yourself, set smaller goals that are easier to accomplish in order to build that feeling of confidence. Each time you accomplish a task, set the bar higher. With each victory, you feel better and better about yourself and your talents. If you don’t develop yourself as a confident person, you could be missing out on much of what life has to offer.
