When you work from home, you're always balancing the demands of your family and your business. It can be even more difficult to juggle those responsibilities when you have younger children, who require much more of your time and attention.
Strict scheduling can help you to make time for both your business and your children. However, if you can find ways to include your children in your business work, you can reduce the need to juggle the two.
Here are a few ideas for how you can get your children in on the act in your home business:
Have Shared “Work” Time:
Children like to feel empowered. You can get more time to focus on work by telling your children that it's your shared “work” time. Invite them to sit next to you to do their own work while you do yours. Young children can tap away at a play laptop, or older children can actually work on a tablet or laptop doing homework. If your business involves making a product, you can work on creating while your children work on their own.
Working side-by-side will inspire a conspiratorial attitude that will make your children feel like you are in it together, sharing quality time together even.
Assign Age-Appropriate Tasks:
Don't feel like you have to work around your children: Invite them to help you out in your work. If you have young children, this “help” might including tasks like “filing” or “organizing” in which you give them papers to move about to feel like they are chipping in. For older children, you might be able to get them to actually file. If you make products, you can ask your children to do tasks like gather materials or cut them.
When your children are working with you, you don't have to figure out how to make time for work separate from the time you spend with your children. You can do it all together.
Put Them in Your Advertising:
Children are great ambassadors for moms that are self employed. If it's appropriate to your brand or your product, you can put your children in your advertising. This might mean using their picture in your logo or shooting a video with them using your product.
By putting your children in your advertising, you can make them feel like they are playing a valuable role in helping your business to grow (because they are). This will help you to spend more time together while also doing the important work you need to do for your business.
Ask for Ideas:
Children are creative and imaginative. You might be surprised at the ideas they come up with if you just ask. Talk to them about what you are trying to accomplish with your business, such as advertising your services, coming up with a new product, or writing a slogan. They may have some good outside-the-box ideas that you can put to use — or at least that will spark usable ideas of your own.
Stop trying to juggle your responsibilities with your business and your children. Focus instead on how you can combine the two. These ideas can help you get your children in on the act on your home-based business so that you can start making the most of your time.
