Women Entrepreneurs: How To Possess A Work-Life Balance

One of the struggles we all have as women entrepreneurs is creating a form of balance in our lives. As women, we wear many different hats and it’s easy to get pulled in one direction or another and then find ourselves out of balance.
Years ago I realized that I had focused so much on climbing the corporate ladder that I had gotten way off balance, but it wasn’t until I had a life-defining moment that I understood just how far off balance I had gotten.
Let me explain. As a young mom of three kids I found myself sitting in the emergency room praying for a miracle. I pleaded with God to please give me a little more time with my youngest child, my 14-month-old daughter. I would have given anything I had to spend just a few more minutes with her. She passed away that evening and I never did get to hold her one last time or tell her how much I loved her.
So what’s my point you may be wondering?
It wasn’t until that night, and truthfully the years that followed, that it all sank in and I realized how much I had let myself be influenced by society and other people’s idea of success. As time passed it became more and more clear that the time I had spent climbing the corporate ladder was so far off balance from my core values.
So why do I share this with you?
As entrepreneurs we all have a journey to go through in order to create the success we desire and deserve. But the first thing as women entrepreneurs we must do to create balance in our lives is to know what is truly important to us!
Sounds easy but less than 10% of the population have sat down and really thought about what it is that they desire in life. So…
Step 1 – Decide what your top 5 goals and dreams are and write them down.
Do your daily activities match your goals? This is where, as we coach women entrepreneurs, we see a big mismatch. Just as much as my climbing the corporate ladder didn’t match my values, we see women entrepreneur’s daily activities not matching their goals.
Step 2 – A timer and a deadline are your best friends!
A schedule is imperative to keeping balance. Your schedule has to have a start time and a completion time and this is where a timer really helps to keep you on track. I use the timer on my cell phone and many of our clients use a kitchen timer. It’s amazing how much faster and more focused we can be a completing our tasks when we know it has to be done by a deadline.
Step 3 – Take time for yourself.
We all need our “me” time and we have found busy moms and entrepreneurs tend to put themselves at the bottom of the totem pole. Schedule time for yourself, your family and your friends just like you do a dentist appointment and you will have much more clarity and energy. My best, “me time,” activities are exercise, meditation and a walk in nature.
Work-life balance is really about knowing what is important to you and then managing your time to stay focused on your goals and dreams.
