Last month I got to explore what comes in a consultant starter kit, specifically for Tastefully Simple. Unlike many starter kits, the Business Blast Off Kit® comes with a special gift for new consultants; consisting of some key food items and a copy of Jill Blashack Strahan’s book, Simply Shine: Stories That Stirred The Fire.
On the surface, this seems like a nice way to welcome new consultants to the company, but upon reading Jill’s book it’s so much more. Jills’ story of adversity and triumph is just the sort of wisdom that a new consultant or business owner needs to hear when they’re embarking on their own entrepreneurial journey.
When you go into business, whether it’s a direct sales opportunity or your own personal startup, there are going to be times when you feel lost, alone, and utterly down in the dumps. It will be during these times that your passion, perseverance, and persistence will be tested. Often when we look at other successful entrepreneurs, we feel like their success came easy. That they’re smarter, wiser, more outgoing, have better connections, or are just plain lucky. The truth is every entrepreneur faces challenging times.
Simply Shine: Stories That Stirred The Fire gives entrepreneurs an inside look into the dramatic, inspiring, and heartfelt story of Tastefully Simple founder, Jill Blashack Strahan. Broken into six chapters, this book chronicles Jill’s bumpy path to success. Now, I could go into detail on what each chapter entails, but I don’t think it would do the book justice. Instead, I want to share some of the profound lessons from the book.
The Road to Success
“It’s taken me time to realize that peace and happiness and “success” come from trusting. It comes from trusting that. if we’ve done everything we can do, whatever happens in our lives is exactly as it’s meant to be. We don’t have to think it to death. Sometimes we simply have to let go, accept and know that it’s happening for a reason and that it’s for our ultimate good.” – page 46.
It Isn’t Easy
“Business isn’t always easy. Life isn’t always easy. As a matter of fact, it can be doggone tough and very disappointing at times. And here’s the news flash: we can’t control outcomes. We can only control our response to circumstances”. – page 66.
One Step at a Time
“Excellence is built one step at a time, one day at a time, one goal at a time. We set a goal that stretched us a little, and once we get there we’ll be able to see further. Those modest goals can turn into springboards that catapult us to the next level and the next fulfilled dream.” – page 140.
If you’re looking for a dose of entrepreneurial inspiration, I highly recommend checking out Jill’s book, Simply Shine: Stories That Stirred The Fire. It’s a quick and easy read that will leave you feeling uplifted.

Who moved my Cheese? by Spencer Johnson is another must read book that motivates people to move ahead instead of just pondering upon what has happened.
