Interview with Dawn Berryman of Market Mommy

Tell us a little bit about Market Mommy and how you got started.

Market Mommy is an online marketing resource for mom business owners. We offer free marketing tips and advice via our main website, blog and e-newsletter. We also offer low cost advertising and marketing services to mom business owners. I started Market Mommy because I have a background in marketing in communications (B.A. from Indiana University) yet, I still found it difficult to market my online business, Announcements Galore. I started AG in 2007 and to me, it seemed like there was a lack of marketing resources aimed specifically at mom entrepreneurs who are on a limited budget. I founded MarketMommy.com in June 2009 and started the blog in August 2009.

What did you do before launching Market Mommy?

I have worked in the marketing, communications and public relations sector since my graduation from Indiana University in 2002. I still work for a small non-profit organization as a marketing specialist.

How many hours do you work a week and how much is spent is your home office?

Market Mommy probably consumes 20 of my hours a week, at least. Most of that is spent in my home office. more

Question 1: On page 177 it says, “Prolific author and online expert Seth Godwin offered this valuable piece of advice in his blog: “Respond. This is the single biggest advantage you have over the big guys… just be human”. In your experience with online social networking have you found that just being yourself has helped your business?

Question 2: On page 178, Gary Vaynerchuck says, “No matter how big or small you want to go, your authenticity will be at the root of your appeal and is what will keep people coming back to your site and spreading the word about your personal brand, service, or whatever you are offering. If you want to dominate the social media game, all of your effort has to come from the heart”. Have you found this to be true and are you easily able to be yourself online?

Question 3: Chapter 13 talks all about the benefits of a business plan. How many of you have written a business plan and think that it is a must have tool? Who thinks writing a business plan is unnecessary? more

What to Wear When Working at Home

By Jo Barrett-Lennard

As an Image Consultant I continuously have emails and queries from women all over the world asking me what they should be wearing when they work from home.

So… what should you be wearing when you work from home?

The short answer… anything you like!

The long answer… smart casual. Working from home doesn’t have the highest level of credibility about it. We do it because we love it and we believe in what we are doing. We are not seen as “serious” as the neighbours who have the “real” job. Heading outside to collect the mail and seeing the folk next door, saying hi and a light chat… telling them that you had been working.

Maintaining a sense of professionalism whilst working from home can be done simply by dressing the part.

By all means, if you are tapping away at your laptop, cross-legged on the couch, with no visual contact with your client, stick to the pajama pants and tee if it is working for you. But keep in mind, the second you walk out that front door or Skype someone- you are in the public eye.  If you drop off a package to a customer’s house and your wearing your house clothes- what image are you portraying? Even dropping the kids off at school or day-care, what are you wearing? Supermarket? Soccer practice? more
