I had the pleasure of meeting Krysten back in 2013 at the Tastefully Simple Party Palooza. We were both invited because we were bloggers. Since that time, Krysten has added a new member to her family and she’s started a new business with Beautycounter. Read on to see why Krysten decided to join a direct sales business opportunity.
How did you get started in direct retail?
I was first introduced to Beautycounter by a friend who was posting on Facebook, raving about this new company she joined. I was intrigued. The packaging looked gorgeous and she had nothing but extremely positive things to say about the products themselves. I thought I would go out on a limb and asked if she wanted to partner with me (and my blog) for a giveaway. That way I could try the products (for free!) and she could get some exposure. She said yes and I tried the products. After the first time I used the Nourishing Cleansing Balm, I was sold on Beautycounter.
A few months passed and I started doing a little research about skincare and cosmetics products our family was using, specifically the products we were using on our baby. I was completely appalled by what I found. Products marketed as “natural,” “organic,” and “pure” were far, far from what they were claiming. I took a look at Beautycounter again and found out that they had a kid’s line. I dug a little deeper and discovered that Beautycounter’s standards of safety for their entire collection are second to none and again I was sold.
I signed up as a consultant the next day, so take I could take advantage of the consultant discount, as I knew that we would be purchasing products. Our bathroom cabinet needed a complete product safety overhaul. A few days later, I started to think that I should become part of the mission to “get safe products into the hands of everyone.”
It really spoke to me and I haven’t looked back!
What makes Beautycounter different than other direct sales companies?
Beautycounter is very different from other direct sales companies. We are an education first based company. As I mentioned, our mission is to get safe products in the hands of everyone. That means when we discuss Beautycounter we provide education about the industry. Currently, 80% of the ingredients in cosmetic products have not been tested for human use and these ingredients may cause cancer, fertility problems, and severe allergies. Products come second. They are not only safe. They are clinically proven to be effective, and absolutely luxurious. They tend to sell themselves. Beautycounter is also different from other direct sales companies as we are working with the government to change the regulations for cosmetic companies and ingredients they are allowed to use in their products. We have a lobbyist in Washington, D.C. specifically on this issue.
Why is it a great time to start with Beautycounter?
Right now is an excellent time to start with Beautycounter! Our company is two years young and we are working diligently, adding consultants to spread our mission. From 2014-present our company has grown 230%! Just shy of 11,000 Beautycounter consultants sold over 1 million products to date, while getting safe products into homes everywhere. That being said, we are relatively small considering the other companies out there and there is a huge opportunity to grow with Beautycounter, specifically in management roles. People are paying closer attention to all aspects of their life; the food they eat, the exercise they are getting and now the products they are using. This is a great time to jump in and join the Beautycounter team!
Are there any sales minimums with Beautycounter?
Absolutely not! Like I mentioned, I only signed up to get the discount (which is a whopping 25% off all products!) with no intention to sell the products myself. Beautycounter does not require a consultant to have a certain number of sales. If you would sell $1,000 in products one month and one lip sheer next month, there is no penalty. Commissions are paid either way. This is fantastic for women because as we all know, some months are busier than others. With birthday parties, holidays and social functions, you can take a break from Beautycounter and then jump back in whenever the time is right for you!
What has been the biggest struggle for you as a consultant?
For me, it has been getting out of my comfort zone. I have never been opposed to individuals selling to me directly, but I never saw myself doing it. I thought it would feel “icky” to have to ask friends and family to buy the products I was selling or join my team. However, I started to think about why I joined Beautycounter to truly follow the mission of getting safe products in the hands of everyone. Why would I feel icky about having my friends and family use safe products or join as a consultant that would bring an income to someone interested in working from home? Well, I have to tell you, it does not feel icky at all. It feels fantastic, has been extremely well received, and personally rewarding.
As a busy mom, how do you balance your Beautycounter business and family life?
Beautycounter has been great fit for our family. Our daughter is 13 months and I work when she naps during the day and a bit when she goes to bed at night. Sometimes I need to work a little more in the evening than others but, I can determine when that is. If I want to have a glass of wine and unwind with my husband instead, I do it! Quite a bit of the work is online either emailing, on our Behind the Counter system or on Facebook so it is easy to work while on the go as well. I listen to our training calls while driving. I bring my daughter with me when I drop off samples. I often meet a few ladies for coffee in the evening once our kids go to bed which is a perfect excuse to meet up with friends for some adult time as well. My parents have been extremely helpful to give me a day or so a week to really focus in and get my work done and that has been great as well!
What advice do you have for moms who want to work from home?
Goal setting has been very helpful for me. I am by nature a go-getter and I have realized that staying home with my daugher is fantastic but I really did miss setting and hitting goals. Setting small goals each month and hitting them has given me so much personal satisfaction and keeps me coming back for more! I keep my planner with me at all times so I can easily track things. I also block out time on my calendar to strictly work with Beautycounter. No block of time is too small. If you are considering working from home, I would encourage you to join a company that not only has quality products but fulfills your personal needs. Beautycounter has provided me with both.
Thanks, Krysten for sharing your story!
