Shortly after I pressed pause on my teaching career and began staying home with our youngest, I started looking for ways to make extra money. Naturally, I was drawn to remote jobs in education. A few minutes into my search, I was amazed at the number of work from home opportunities for teachers and educators.

Not only did I find many online tutoring and teaching gigs, but I also discovered online test scoring jobs.

Online Test Scoring Jobs Have GREAT Flexibility

When I found out that I could score test papers from home (minus long hours in and out of the classroom), it was a definitive win in my book! Not only could I make money within my field, but this side job also allowed me to be at home with my kiddos.

Best Test Scorer Jobs Available

Below, we’ve outlined some of the best sites hiring individuals (like you!) to score assessments from home. We’ve provided a brief description of each opportunity, but check them out, as you’ll want to learn about other specifics not mentioned here.

1. ACT

With ACT, you’ll score essays right online. Written test essays are scored at intervals throughout the year. Compensation is performance-based. Prospective applicants need a bachelor’s degree, current teaching experience (preferred), authorization to work in the US, and US residency. Pay is $12 per hour or more, based on performance.

2. ALTA Language Services

If you’re bilingual, ALTA Language Services hires part-time language Testing Evaluators. In these roles, you’ll administer the test, score it, and enter the score on the testing platform. Eligibility requirements for these roles include a college degree, excellent communication skills, basic computer skills, knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite, and fluency in the language you’re grading. ALTA Language Services hires in all states except Maine, and the pay rate ranges from $9 to $30 per test, depending on various factors.

3. Cognia

Cognia, formerly Measured Progress, hires seasonal assessment scorers to read, evaluate, and grade student responses in English, math, science, and social studies. You must have a bachelor’s degree and have at least two college-level courses in the subject you’re grading. The average pay for this position at Cognia is $18 per hour, and their peak grading months are April to August.

4. Data Recognition Corporation (DRC)

Based in Minnesota, DRC has been hiring part-time seasonal test scorers since 1978. To get started, apply for a position in January, as March to July is their peak season. As a test scorer, you’ll score written essays or math problems in subject areas like writing, reading, math, science, and social studies. Training is paid, but you’ll need to pass a qualifying test before being allowed to work on a project. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree, strong computer skills, and the ability to commit to the full project (each project is 2-6 weeks in duration). The starting pay is $18 per hour, and shifts are Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, or 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM.

5. Educational Testing Services (ETS)

ETS hires part-time scorers for the College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) exam, as well as raters for the TOEIC, TOEFL, Praxis, and GRE exams. Scorers evaluate samples such as written short answers, spoken responses, and others. Work schedules are varied and cyclical throughout the year, depending on the number of test-takers and test administrations. These are remote positions, but there are also on-site scoring positions throughout the US. 7. Literably

Literably is another flexible position where you can set your own hours. It is a little different than some of the other online scoring positions we’ve mentioned. As a Literably scorer, you’ll evaluate oral recordings of elementary students. The position is much like that of a transcriptionist; you’ll listen to student audio recordings and transcribe errors. Pay is based on your performance, speed, and accuracy. You’ll also need to pass sample tasks as part of the hiring process. Literably hires independent contractors in all states except CA, CT, MA, MT, NE, and NJ.

8. Measurement Incorporated

Measurement Incorporated readers/evaluators are trained to score constructed-response test items in English language arts, mathematics, science, and other areas. This is temporary; project-by-project work is concentrated from March to June. 

Some of their requirements include a bachelor’s degree (in any field) from an accredited college or university, completion of a writing sample, an interview, professional references, and proof of eligibility to work in the US. 

Measurement Incorporated hires in 29 states, including AL, AR, DE, FL, GA, IA, ID, IN, KS, KY, LA, MI, MO, MS, MT, NE, NC, NH, OH, OK, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, WI, and WV. They also sometimes have openings for Californian residents. For these positions, you must be certified and currently teaching in the state of California. Applications for Measurement Incorporated are accepted from December to April.

9. MetriTech, Inc.

MetriTech, Inc. hires seasonal test scorers to evaluate ESL speaking and writing tests. For these online positions, you must live in Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Texas, or Wisconsin, have a bachelor’s degree, and some positions require a TESOL, TEFL, or CELTA certification. Hours will depend on the contract, and you can create your own schedule.

10. Pearson Scoring Jobs

Pearson has remote, temporary test scoring opportunities available from February to June. Scorers evaluate open-ended questions for a pay rate of $15 per hour, plus incentives paid on daily and weekly performance (up to $150 per week). For these positions, you must be a US resident living in the US and have a bachelor’s degree; they also prefer candidates with teaching experience. In these roles, you must be able to work at least 20 hours per week.

11. Study.com

Study.com hires freelancers from the US, Canada, the Philippines, and India. Positions include lesson writing, curriculum development, homework help, research, editing, copywriting, and, of course, assignment graders! For these independent contracting roles, you will need a college degree, teaching experience, and expertise in the subject matter you will be grading. With Study.com, you can choose your schedule, and you’ll get paid twice a month.

12. Write Score

Write Score is an educational company that utilizes assessment data that educators use to promote learning and academic achievement. As a Write Score contractor, you’ll read and score test taker responses. Positions are available throughout the school year, and candidates must hold a 2-year college degree. Orientation starts in late July and early August, and you’ll also need to pass three qualifying tests to begin working on assignments. 

One reader from The Work at Home Woman applied to Write Score and learned that you only earn $0.35 per scored essay. This means you would need to score 30 essays in 2 minutes each to earn $10.50 per hour. Others on Glassdoor also complain of extremely low pay for the workload expected. Although the pay is extremely low, we’re providing this information for you to assess.

13. Vericant 

Vericant, which ETS owns, hires online English language raters. In these online roles, raters evaluate videos for English language proficiency following a Spoken English Evaluation (SEE) rubric. For these remote test scorer jobs, you must have a bachelor’s degree, be a native English speaker, have experience teaching ESL, and be able to work 5 to 15 hours per week between September and March.
