Entrepreneurial Lessons Learned from the Reality TV Show – The Bachelor

By Holly Reisem Hanna

I’ll admit it… I’m a huge fan of the reality TV show The Bachelor, and it’s counterpart The Bachelorette. I’ve watched it religiously for years.

If you’re not familiar with the show, the premise is pretty simple. There are a group of 25 individuals that vie for the attention of the Bachelor or Bachelorette. At the end of each episode the Bachelor/Bachelorette hands out roses to women/men that they want to continue dating, until eventually they narrow it down to just two contestants. During the show’s finale, the Bachelor/Bachelorette chooses the individual that they would like to marry and leaves the other contestant with a broken heart. (more…)

Are You in Love with Your Business?

By Dawn Berryman

Are you in love with your business? Do you have the same passion and energy for your business as you did when you first started out? As with anything, it can sometimes be hard to maintain excitement and enthusiasm especially during slow or challenging times.

How do you rekindle that early romance? How do you find that spark and that passion that was there when you first built your concept? New relationships are full of potential and promise, as are new businesses. After a few years, the newness wears off and reality sets in. Running a business is hard work, even after all of the initial work of its formation is done. It may be easy to become discouraged, but don’t. Instead, focus on reenergizing your business. (more…)

What Entrepreneurs Can Learn From Harry Potter

By Kelly Robbins

Entrepreneurs can learn a lot from Harry Potter. The lesson is not in wizardry or how to save the world, but in how important having a single focus and manic determination is to achieving success.

The Goal

Harry’s goal was to find and kill Voldemort, which involved first finding and killing the seven horcruxes where Voldemort had hidden parts of his soul. Harry was very clear on his goal and looked at every experience and encounter as either for or against him achieving his goal. Did this experience point him in a new direction? Was this person helpful or hurtful to achieving the goal? (more…)

Interview with Elizabeth Green Co-Founder of Eating For Me

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your entrepreneurial journey.

I’m a mom of one three year old boy, and a co-founder of Eating For Me.com and Eating For Breastfeeding.com. Eating For Me is our main site that houses nutritional tips and information for anyone. Eating For Breastfeeding.com is a membership site for nursing moms that answers all of their nutrition questions and provides meal plans, recipes, etc. I love what I do, but never could have predicted this.

My dream was to be a news anchor for a top station, and I spent several years climbing that ladder. But an unexpected blessing (my son) changed everything for me. I wanted to spend as much time with him as possible, so I studied, explored, and eventually started my own business. I started out hosting online videos for other businesses, before coming up with the idea to partner with my best friend and Registered Dietitan, to create our own video-based websites. Our business plan continues to evolve and grow, and we are very excited to see where it ends up!

(I wrote a blog post for The Work at Home Woman about my journey if you need more details called Finding Your Niche – Sometimes You Have to Give Up the Dream) (more…)

Audible – The Way to Squeeze Reading into Your Busy Day

By Holly Reisem Hanna

Last year The Work at Home Woman hosted a Business Book Club, where every couple of months participants would read and discuss a new business book. While there was a lot of interest expressed in the group, the biggest complaint that I heard from participants, is that there wasn’t enough time in the day to sit down and do the required reading.

Many of these women were juggling full-time jobs, busy family schedules and part-time businesses. Participation in the club was so low, that I decided to write an article specifically for these women on ways to save time – it didn’t help. Atlas, I finally decided to shut-down the club. (more…)
